When applying to study with us, it is important to determine what type of student you are and how you can study at CTC.
What type of Student am I?
In a globalised world where multiple modes of study exist, understanding which student category you fit into can at times be confusing.
When applying to study with us, it is important to determine whether you will be an overseas student or a domestic student AND whether you will be studying off-shore or on-shore. Depending on your student category, you may be eligible for financial assistance through the Australian Government.
See the definitions below to help you to better understand the various types of student categories.
Domestic students
- A student who is an Australian citizen; or an Australian Permanent Resident; or a New Zealand citizen and is residing in Australia or studying from overseas.
- Conditions of Study
- If residing overseas the student is classified as ‘Off-Shore’ and needs to be enrolled in an online course of study or travel back to Australia for intensive units.
- Does not require a visa to study.
- Fee-Help is available to Domestic students. For more information visit our Fees page.
Overseas students

- A student who is a temporary resident of Australia; or a permanent resident of New Zealand; or a resident or citizen of any other country.
- Onshore: a student who is residing in Australia for the semester and is undertaking a program of study conducted by an Australian higher education provider.
- Must undertake a full-time load
- Visa is needed
- Off-shore: a student who is residing overseas for the semester.
- Can undertake either full-time or part-time load
- Visa is not needed

- Overseas students are not entitled to Fee-Help
Undergraduate
A student undertaking one of the undergraduate courses.
Postgraduate
A student undertaking one of the postgraduate courses.
Higher Degrees by Research
A student undertaking either the Master of Philosophy or the Doctor of Philosophy.
Audit students
- Students who enrol to audit a unit, attend classes and prepare set readings but undertake the unit without assessment or academic credit..
- By their nature language units are not amenable to auditing.
Single unit enrolment
Students may enrol for single units – with assessment – without enrolling in a degree.
Exchange studies
Within University of Divinity
- CTC students may arrange to undertake studies at other Colleges of University of Divinity.
- Similarly, students who are enrolled at another College of University of Divinity may arrange to undertake exchange studies at CTC.
- Online units are also available through the University of Divinity.
Cross-institutional enrolment
- Students of universities outside University of Divinity can undertake units at CTC and have them credited to the award in their home university.
- Check with your current institution about the flexibility of electives and cross-institutional study.
- Cross-institutional students are required to enrol directly with CTC after obtaining permission from their home university to complete their cross-institutional enrolment.
External studies
Outside University of Divinity
Students may elect to undertake a unit of study at other institutions recognised by University of Divinity, under certain conditions, including:
- The area of study is not offered at University of Divinity;
- The external institution is recognised by University of Divinity;
- The unit is approved by a Course Advisor at least four weeks prior to the start date of the unit.
How can I study?
- F2F – Attending in the classroom (at a fixed time each week unless stated otherwise)
- OLA – Online Asynchronous (on demand at a weekly pace unless stated otherwise)
- OLS – Online Synchronous (at a fixed time each week unless stated otherwise)
- Blended – Offered with a combination of modes; e.g.: part Face-to-Face AND part Online Asynchronous = F2F + OLA. Class times in the timetable are for the fixed time component only
- Hybrid – Some units are offered both as fully Face-to-Face, as well as fully Online Synchronous at the same time = F2F or OLS at the same time. Students choose one mode OR the other
- Other – Intensives, Supervised Reading Units, Clinical Pastoral Education, Practicum, and Research units
