Bachelor of Theology

The Bachelor of Theology (BTheol) critically examines life and faith through the study of scriptures, theological traditions and historical contexts. It aims to broaden self-understanding and facilitate cultural engagement. The Bachelor of Theology assists students to develop knowledge across broad areas of theology and depth in particular areas of interest. It develops research and communication skills, and prepares graduates for further theological study. It may be possible for students to undertake study in a ministry setting as part of the course.

Course learning outcomes

Graduates of the Bachelor of Theology:

  1. have a broad, coherent and critical knowledge of Christian theological traditions and methodologies, with focused knowledge in at least one area.
  2. can articulate the knowledge they have acquired to generate insights and communicate them through clear reasoned argument.
  3. are able to engage theological traditions and contemporary culture.
  4. have a theologically informed basis for engagement and service in community and world.

Dual qualifications

A candidate may undertake the Bachelor of Theology in combination with, or subsequent to:

Advanced Diploma in Philosophy or the Advanced Diploma in Theology and Ministry

  • The candidate must achieve 288 points that comply with the course rules of an Advanced Diploma.
  • The candidate must achieve a further 144 points that comply with the course rules of the Bachelor of Theology.
  • To complete the second award, up to 144 points may be credited from the first award. 
  • The minimum time for completion of both awards is four years.

Bachelor of Ministry

  • The candidate must achieve 432 points that comply with the course rules of the Bachelor of Ministry
  • The candidate must achieve a further 144 points that comply with the course rules of the Bachelor of Theology
  • To complete the second award, up to 288 points may be credited from the first award
  • The candidate must not include more than 252 points at Level 1
  • The candidate must include at least 144 points at Level 3 including at least 36 points in Mission and Ministry and at least 36 points in either Biblical Studies or Systematic Theology
  • The candidate may choose to complete one Capstone unit 
  • The minimum time for completion of both awards is four years.

Admission criteria

Successful completion of the Victorian Certificate of Education in an Australian secondary school or the Diploma in Theology, or equivalent.

It may be possible for students to receive credit into their course for prior undergraduate study in related areas.

The Bachelor of Ministry (BMin) prepares students for the practice of ministry. It establishes foundations for ministry through the study of scriptures, theological traditions, historical and contemporary contexts. It requires concentrated study in ministry praxis. The Bachelor of Ministry provides a foundation for graduates to understand and articulate their identity and place in the world. It may be possible for students to undertake study in a ministry setting as part of the course.
